They simply did not go out of their way to correct people’s assumptions about their race, assumptions that people may or may not have expressed openly to them, just as I had never expressed my assumption about race to Sara. Much like with Alice, people imposed a racial identity upon them without ever explicitly asking them about their own identifications. It was at that time that I also began to think more broadly, not only about how society frames individuals in terms of race, but also about how both law and society work together to define families and their rights and opportunities by race—especially when those families are multiracial.
As I wrote my essay, I realized that the story of the Rhinelanders dampened my spirits, rather than lifted them. Even though Alice had, to some extent, won a racial victory of sorts, I found her narrative to be depressing. It was a tale of losing by winning and a story of lost intimacy, love, and devotion in a world with plenty of room but, sadly, no space within which Alice and Leonard could be lovingly and openly together. I began to tell myself that the story of the Rhinelanders was no longer relevant.
